Choosing the Right CCTV System for a Commercial Property

CCTV buyers often start with equipment. A better starting point is purpose.

1. What must each camera see?

A camera for identifying faces at an entrance needs a different position and lens from a camera that gives an overview of a car park. Write down the purpose of each position before you choose equipment.

2. How good is the lighting?

Cameras need light. Poorly lit areas may need additional lighting or cameras designed for low light.

3. How long must you keep footage?

Retention affects the storage you need. It should reflect your risk and your legal obligations.

4. Who is allowed to view it?

Limit access to named people, keep credentials private and review them regularly.

5. Who will watch or review it?

A camera that nobody checks will help only after an incident. Decide whether footage will be monitored live, reviewed daily or checked only on demand.

6. How will it be maintained?

Lenses get dirty, cables get damaged and recorders fail. Agree who will test the system and how often.

Privacy and signage

Cameras that record people involve personal data. Post clear signs and write a short policy on use and retention.

Get a survey

A site survey by an experienced installer will normally save money by avoiding unnecessary cameras and ensuring coverage where it counts.
